Including East Shore Ski Resorts
What do we mean by resort? We've narrowed it down to ski places, whether they have lots of amenities or just a hill that's great for beginners and a snack shack. There are three South Lake Tahoe ski resorts, and that includes one that's a bit off the main drag, Kirkwood, as well as one of the Mothers of all Lake Tahoe Ski Resorts, Heavenly Mountain Resort. The other is the well-liked Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort that is perfect for families or big groups with varying skiing abilities as it has terrain that works for all levels.
One of the South Lake Tahoe ski resorts that should be noted, Heavenly, spreads out like a firmament above the town and influences most things here. Its presence is huge in both winter and summer. Like many Lake Tahoe ski resorts, Heavenly caters to skiers of all abilities, and it also features other winter sports such tubing and terrain parks. An amenity at Heavenly that you won’t find at other South Lake Tahoe ski resorts is the Gondola that ferries people up the mountain under snow or sun. In the summer, the resort provides tons of fun in the form of ropes courses, climbing walls, zip lines and biking and hiking along the now-not-snow-covered ski trails. This South Lake Tahoe ski resort also provides one of the most known and revered views of the shimmering Lake Tahoe from a majority of its mountainside, worthy of a trip up whether you see it through snow goggles or sunglasses.
Close to South Lake Tahoe Ski Resorts
Kirkwood is considered a South Lake Tahoe ski resort despite the fact that it's not located in town. It might take more effort to get to it, but locals say that this is a good ski area for athletes who want to push their limits some. If you're not a ninja skier, though, you have the option of snowshoeing or cross-country excursions and easier inclines.

Founded on an ethos of sustainability, environmental stewardship and a legacy of luxury, Edgewood Tahoe Resort has risen from a world-class golf course to a world-class travel and business destination, offering guests access to unforgettable alpine experiences. Set on 235 acres, Edgewood Tahoe earned a reputation as a vacation destination during the 1880s. In 1968 the resort rose to international fame when its soon-to-be-iconic golf course was unveiled. Featuring a restaurant, golf shop and lakefront event space, the adjacent Clubhouse was built in 1973 and subsequently remodeled in 1993.
Recognized as a Four-Star Luxury Resort & Spa by Forbes Travel Guide for the fifth consecutive year in 2025, the LEED-certified Lodge redefines mountain luxury with 154 contemporary guest rooms, golf course, a critically acclaimed spa, a year-round swimming pool and a hot tub, elegant event spaces and the gorgeous Great Room.

South Lake Tahoe Resort
1501 Kirkwood Meadows Drive, Kirkwood, CA
Kirkwood Mountain is a South Lake Tahoe ski area tucked a little out of the way of the hustle and bustle that is seen in town. Kirkwood is about a 45-minute drive from the center of South Lake. This small distance creates positives: crowds are smaller and attention to personal service is higher. The ski area itself is great for all levels of skiers with a large area for beginner and intermediate skiers and snowboarders as well as a large enough area of expert terrain to keep any advanced skier busy. In the summer the ski area transitions and offers lift-access hiking and mountain biking, offering 22 trails in the Kirkwood valley, 12 of those accessed via chairlift and 12 of those miles being curvy, banked single track. For both seasons, ski, snowboard and bike rentals are offered at the mountain.
