Parents vacationing with their kids may want to look at a visit to the Old Truckee Jail Museum as a two-fold exercise: educational and cautionary tale. Upon visiting the old jail, kids will get a cool, Old West history lesson that should grab their attention for a while. If not and they get unruly? Well, then, there is plenty of lock-up space. The jail, with its 32-inch-thick rock walls and foreboding cells, recounts Truckee’s history in great detail. After taking a look around at the rather crude settings, some parents and grandparents of certain vintages will find it amazing that the jail was used from 1875 all the way to 1964. Operated by the Truckee Donner Historical Society, the jail also features historical photos and exhibits highlighting Truckee’s past, including the timber years, ice industry and very early winter sports. Visitors can take a self-guided tour or arrange a private tour with a docent. The library hours change according to season and weather so check ahead to make sure they are open.
