Although it’s a club, Auburn Ski Club (ASC) & Training Center welcomes the public to cross-country ski on its trail network. As far as Donner Summit history goes, ASC goes back to the 1930s when its grounds featured the western United States’ first engineered ski jump. Even before that, trains from the Sacramento Valley would bring loads of flatlanders up to Donner Summit to ski. Later the founder of ASC persuaded state lawmakers to open Highway 40 year-round, which allowed people to drive to the slopes. These days the ASC trail system is run as a nonprofit ski area and is open to the public. The trails are accessible either with an XC season trail pass or day pass. Passes and rental gear are both available at the ASC Training Center office via the Boreal Ski Resort parking lot. ASC is also an alpine, Nordic, biathlon and snowboard training center, a rare combined-discipline program that develops U.S. Olympic talent. Ever thought it would be a blast to ski and target shoot at the same time? Sign up for an introductory winter biathlon clinic. But don’t hesitate because classes fill up quickly.
