June 15 - 21 Snow or Summer?

By Shanie Matthews | Tuesday, June 13, 2017

Although we are literally a week out from the first days of summer, it snowed here last week! It seems old man winter just doesn’t want to leave.

In all reality the snow is melting away fast, leaving in its wake beautifully clean air and a sweetness to the morning temperatures. It’s a fun mix, actually.

With the dichotomy of weather, it gives even more reason to get out and enjoy the entertaining activities in store for this week. This is my pick for top five events to partake in.

Ski Run Farmer's Market & Street Fair

With summer comes the wonderful ability to buy directly from small farmers in the area. One such place to participate in the Farm to Fork movement is in South Lake Tahoe at the Ski Run Farmer's Market & Street Fair. Happening every Friday afternoon through August, the corner of streets Larch and Birch set the stage for more than 25 vendors offering organic farm fresh produce, honey, locally raised meats, hot food for dinner, handmade ice cream, handmade chocolates and other treats. In addition to all the yummy goodies, there is a bounce house and face painting for kiddo entertainment, live music and fun performances as well. The market starts at 3 p.m.

Peaks and Paws

A favorite Tahoe event is happening on Saturday, June 17 and Sunday, June 18, Peaks and Paws. An event that shows a little love to our furry four-legged best friend, this two-day festival is filled with live music, tasty food as well as wine and beer tasting. For the pooch there are dog-friendly guided hikes up the mountain being offered as well as a place to dive off a dock and enjoy a little swimming. Whether or not you have a dog, visiting does a good thing as all proceeds go to the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe. Music gets going at 11 a.m. and finishes up at 5 p.m. This is a family friendly event.

Alpenglow Sports Mountain Festival

If you are a lady who enjoys the beauty that a wilderness camping trip offers, then partaking in Alpenglow Sports’ Women's Desolation Wilderness Overnight Trip is highly recommended. Just one of the many options of ways to get out and about during Alpenglow Sports week-long Mountain Festival, this is a wonderful way to enjoy four-course adventure dining with Michelle Shea. You will not only learn all about creating tasty, nutritious meals while out in the wilderness, but you will also get to rub shoulders with other like-minded people. This is an overnight camping trip that requires strong physical fitness and the ability to walk for 3-5 hours at a medium pace while ascending in elevation and isn’t recommended for those coming from sea level or not accustomed to altitude. Departure is on Saturday, June 17, at 9 a.m.

Yoga in the Park

One of the best ways to enjoy the healing aspects of yoga is by doing it outdoors. A great way to do this is by participating in Kellee Rich’s Vinyasa-based class in the Truckee River Regional Park on the Chief Truckee Lawn. The class happens every other Sunday, starting June 18 until August 19. The class is from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and costs $10. This is a great class for all abilities, so don’t be shy.

Concert at Commons Beach

Another absolute favorite for Tahoe locals for the past 12 years is Concerts at Commons Beach. Happening each and every Sunday afternoon — all summer long — this is the place to enjoy great live music with stunning views of Lake Tahoe as well as incredible food and drink. Running June 18 to September 3, each show begins at 3 or 4 p.m. It is encouraged to bring a picnic, blanket and low-back chairs. This is a fun event for all ages.
