To understand the historical roots of the Tahoe area, one has to be aware of the ranching heritage of the nearby Carson Valley. The meadows of South Shore served as summer range for livestock back then, a tradition that continued even through to the not-too-distant past. One way to gain a perspective on the ranching way of life that helped to shape this region is to visit the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park. Guided tours of the ranch house are available year round by reservation, and activities and events take place in the park from May through September. Toilets and picnic tables are available, and the park is open and spacious, making for a nice family outing to take in scenery of the Carson Valley and the splendor of the Carson Range. Pets are not allowed, and the gift shop accepts cash or checks only. The Dangberg Ranch is also available for private events such as weddings or reunions.
