In 1969, California and Nevada legislators agreed to a unique Compact for sharing Lake Tahoe resources/responsibilities. The two states and the U.S. Congress amended the Compact in 1980, with public law 96-551, which also established the Tahoe Transportation District (TTD). The agency is responsible for facilitating and implementing safe, environmentally positive, multi-modal transportation plans, programs and projects for the Lake Tahoe Basin, including transit operations.

Specific tax revenue to support transit and transportation facilities can be allotted to the District. TTD may also acquire, own and operate public transportation systems and parking facilities serving the Tahoe region and provide access to convenient transportation terminals outside of the region.

Lake Tahoe Boating 

Founded more than a century ago, the Tahoe Yacht Club brings together people who share a passion for Lake Tahoe, boating, and an active outdoor lifestyle. Members enjoy a year-round calendar of sailing, powerboating, paddling, hiking, cycling, skiing, snowshoeing, golf, pickleball, bocce, monthly social gatherings, and signature celebrations including the Gin Fizz Fling & Blessing of the Fleet, Independence Day festivities, Kentucky Derby, Oktoberfest, Halloween, and New Year's Eve parties. The club also provides access to member-use kayaks, paddleboards, and sailboats, supports shoreline cleanups through its Blue Crew environmental team, offers reciprocity with yacht clubs around the world, and proudly sponsors the annual Lake Tahoe Concours d'Elegance, one of the world's premier antique and classic wooden boat shows.

In 1972 a group of Tahoe Yacht Club members and friends got together to share their passion for wooden boats and created the Tahoe Yacht Club Foundation. From a modest beginning, the Lake Tahoe Concours d' Elegance has grown to play a significant role in the wooden boat community, as well as the Lake Tahoe maritime community. The Tahoe Yacht Club Foundation has hosted the Lake Tahoe Concours d'Elegance focusing on continuing and maintaining growth of the show,  quality of boat exhibits, high judging standards and practices, and most importantly, the passion for wooden boats between exhibitors and the public.

Each year the Tahoe Yacht Club Foundation raises money for charitable donation which is exclusively focused in providing educational opportunities originating in the Lake Tahoe area that enhance expertise or understanding of maritime skills.

Historians David & Gayle Woodruff are presenters of a wide range of Chautauqua, living history and lecture programs on various topics in Western Nevada, Lake Tahoe and Eastern Sierra history. They are the authors of eight local and regional history books, including the popular three book series, Tales Along El Camino Sierra. They live in Gardnerville, NV and have been active in local history for more than 30 years.

Step-back in time and stroll through the summer homes and gardens of Lake Tahoe’s early vacationers. Built between 1894 and 1921, the Tallac Historic Site preserves a unique era of Tahoe history in time for today’s visitors. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987 and offers a variety of public recreation activities. Explore the interpretative trails, mosey along the beach, take a guided tour or attend a special event, the Tallac Historic Site is where cultural and environmental stewardship meet!
