Like so many of the longtime restaurants in town, Ernie’s Coffee Shop has a fascinating history. After more than 20 years in business on one side of the street, the Bruso family bought a restaurant on the other side of the road and rebuilt the property into a brand-new Ernie’s, where the business has continued to thrive for more than a decade. (What happened to the original location? Under new ownership, it was reopened under the name of Bert’s Cafe of course!) Not long ago, the Brusos passed the baton on to a younger generation of restaurateurs and sold the coffee shop to South Tahoe residents Kent Baer and Nate Bergner, who stay true to the past while adjusting the shop to reflect their own personalities. Ernie’s is open every day from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., and both breakfast and lunch are served all day long. For breakfast, try the homemade biscuits and gravy, and a great choice for lunch is the Montana grilled turkey sandwich. Ernie’s has also added a special healthy eating section to the menu including veggie and vegan selections.
