We're sharing some history this week... The Village Christian Thrift Shop has been blessing our community since 1969!
The Presbyterian Women’s Thrift Shop was started in 1969 by the women of The Village Church on Enterprise St. across from the fire station. Although originally founded to assist the church through its struggling first few years, the shop quickly became a mainstay of community assistance for the North Shore of Lake Tahoe. During its early years, donations left at the fire station for fire victims were distributed through the shop. Now that Ace Hardware has been recently sold, we are the longest continually operating business in Incline Village.
By the early ’90s the shop had outgrown the Enterprise location and moved to its present location at 799 Southwood Blvd. on the upper level of Village Center. We acquired the adjacent shop in 2019, doubling our floor space. Both women & men volunteers staff the shop six days a week. Since volunteers represent all Christian denominations, the name of our shop was changed to The Village Christian Thrift Shop to recognize its ecumenical foundation. All profits support Christian organizations and benevolent nonprofits locally, nationally, and internationally. Since 2015, we have given over a million dollars to those in need. Additionally, throughout the year, we have fundraisers for fire victims, firefighters and other community needs such as hunger relief.
The repurposing and recycling of clothing, housewares, sporting goods, art, electronics, toys, games, books and furniture is a tangible way to help those in need along with treading lightly on our planet. Our shoppers, as well as those who donate goods, contribute to this worthy effort.
We work closely with the other thrift stores in our community. On the second Saturday in November, we all open our doors for a very popular Holiday Open House with Santa, refreshments, and live music.
