Great Basin Outdoor School is an environmental education 501(c)(3) non-profit that has been running since 1998. We immerse students from local elementary and middle schools in multi-day overnight science camps and day field studies in spectacular natural settings on the shore of Lake Tahoe and other local sites. Students hike, snowshoe, learn local ecology, and more with hands-on, standards-based activities. We also make sure to incorporate team-building and social-emotional learning. Lessons build healthy habits, social and academic skills, and a connection to the community and the natural world. All overnight science camps are held right on the shore of Lake Tahoe at Camp Galilee with cozy heated cabins, great meals, and a private beach. Teachers receive STEM training and professional development credit. All activities adhere to Next Generation Science Standards and are taught by educators with extensive experience in the natural sciences.
Aside from our school-year programs, each summer we partner with the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection to host a Project WET workshop for educators. Winter, summer and fall break day camps are available for all kids age 6-12 who have a passion for exploring the outdoors! We are also doing a monthly guided hike series, which is perfect for families or individuals who want to learn more about the nature of Lake Tahoe and the Great Basin.
