In mid-June, avid paddleboarders, kayakers and enthusiasts for every other watersport that involves a paddle and some sort of vehicle come together to put their skills to the test at the Thunderbird Paddling Festival. Competitors start at Sand Harbor Beach, south of Incline Village, and paddle south and back to the starting position. This Lake Tahoe annual event offers three events in which to compete: the 8-miler, the 4-miler and the Big Blue Waterman Challenge. The 4- and 8-miler competitors follow the same course, but they just turn around at different locations to return to shore. Throughout the race participants can admire Lake Tahoe’s picturesque shoreline from the view on the lake. If you like triathlons and you like paddleboarding, be sure to check out the Big Blue Waterman Challenge. This race has its athletes swimming, paddleboarding and running their way to the finish line. The Thunderbird Paddling Festival isn’t only for adults – kids can join in the fun to. The Youth “GROM” Races let kids ages 5-12 compete in their own set of races. At the end of the races, the first three finishers in all the groups receive awards for their performance.
