For history buffs, Hooligan Rock in Truckee was where all sorts of unseemly Wild West shenanigans were carried out, so much so that town elders blew the giant boulder (to be found in the Safeway shopping center parking lot) in half. Golfers taking on the Coyote Moon course may want to take along their own explosives after encountering Coyote Moon’s own giant granite Hooligan Rock on the par 5, hole 7. Along with its many unique granite boulders and outcroppings, Coyote Moon’s other 17 holes feature a ton of big pine and fir trees and a prominent creek (Trout Creek). And due to its mountainside location, Coyote Moon constantly serves up elevation changes. In other words, this ain’t no flatlander course. Also, this isn’t some subdivision golf course dotted with McMansions either. The course’s 250 acres offer stunning views of the Sierra Crest and nary a view of homes. The front nine play relatively fast, but due to Coyote Moon’s challenging layout, the back nine can be slow. A clubhouse serves up breakfast and lunch items, and there is a happy hour Sunday through Thursday. Pro shop and lessons are available as is a putting green, but there is no driving range.
