Golfers may not see the Golden Bear as they play Old Greenwood, but there is chance they’ll see a California black bear roaming the wooded, mountain course in Truckee. Designed by Jack Nicklaus, aka the Golden Bear, and opened in 2004, Old Greenwood Golf Course is a high-end, 18-hole, par 72 course open to the public. Straight hitters will fare better on Old Greenwood’s fairways, as slicers and hookers will find themselves in the pines, firs and tough ground cover that line the course. Flatlanders will also find that they’ll be hitting the ball a bit longer due to the high elevation. Along with a practice facility with putting and chipping greens, there is a 32-tee driving range. Those looking to up their game should check out the Golf Academy at Old Greenwood, which offers private, group and corporate lessons, five-day Junior Camps and one-, two- and three-day schools.
