Jim Kelley opened Tahoe Nugget in 1962 and it remains one of the oldest family-owned casinos in Nevada. It’s now run by Jim and Jeff, Kelley’s sons, who maintain their father’s philosophy of providing good food and good drink at an affordable price. The bar that runs down one side of the casino has more than a dozen craft beers on draft. Outside there’s a burger shack, open in the summer, with patio seating. That’s where you can get the famous Awful Awful hamburger (awfully big and awfully good) that the Nugget has been serving for 50 years. The casino features about 120 of the latest slot and gaming machines and has a poker room in back with a couple of tables. A little more down to earth than the larger casinos, Jim Kelley’s Tahoe Nugget remains popular with locals and visitors alike.
