Snap on your skis and take your mark for one of the largest Nordic ski races west of Mississippi. This Lake Tahoe annual event is the main fundraiser for the Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue Team and open to anyone who buys tickets for it. The proceeds go toward purchasing equipment for this nonprofit organization made up of volunteers and funding avalanche education programs. The Great Ski Race welcomes cross skiers of all ages to put their skills to the test on this 30-kilometer course. The course begins at Lake Tahoe in Tahoe City, and participants work their way to the finish line in historic Truckee. Imagine climbing out of the snowy Tahoe Basin and over Starratt Pass then onward to historic Truckee on a downhill run along Sawtooth Ridge — all of this while you’re surrounded by breathtaking views of the sparkling lake and skyscraping Sierra Nevada Mountains. Once you cross the finish line, participants get to enjoy the after party complete with food, brews and live tunes for dancing. Whether or not you race through the course is up to you; some do and some don’t. It is recommended, however, that participants have some degree of experience before embarking on a 30-kilometer race. This Lake Tahoe annual event usually takes place in early March.
