Whale Beach is the last of a series of secluded beaches accessed off of Highway 28 on the east shore of Lake Tahoe and is also known as Black Sand Beach. Accessed via a trailhead that begins at the free public parking area 2.6 miles south of Sand Harbor, the trail begins steep than quickly levels off. When the trail Ys take a left (walking right will take you to Chimney Beach). Hiking left you will first encounter Secret Cove, a nudist beach a quarter-mile down the trail. In about another quarter-mile you will come across Boaters Beach and then right after come to Creek Beach (two beaches of soft sand split by a rock outcrop). The trail will fade away to a small trail that leads toward the water in about another quarter-mile. Cross a few boulders to access the most secluded beach of them all, Whale Beach. There are a few large boulders in the lake that are reminiscent of whales breaching, thus the name. There are no services at this beach other than nearby porta-potties, and it is pack-it-in, pack-it-out area. This beach is not advisable for motorboats and is considered a clothing-optional area. Dogs are allowed.
