Vikingsholm is Tahoe's hidden castle, famed for its elegant stone and woodwork and dramatic natural landscape. Construction of this masterpiece of Scandinavian architecture began in 1929 and was completed in 1932. Owner Lora J. Knight hosted many friends and family there until her death in 1945. This historical property is situated at the head of Emerald Bay and across from Fannette Island. During summer, parking in the lot off Highway 89 is extremely limited during peak visitation hours; large RVs and buses may not enter due to size limits. All visitors must walk down a steep 1-mile path to access the castle or beach and then uphill on the return; the trail has an elevation gain of 400 feet. Interior tours of Vikingsholm Castle begin Memorial Day weekend and continue until the end of September; hours are 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and tickets can be purchased at the Vikingsholm Visitor Center adjacent to the castle. Guests are welcome to enjoy the grounds and beaches year-round; however, the trail and parking lot may be impacted by snow or ice. There is also access via the lake for private boats wishing to access the castle and castle dock; however, vehicle access to the castle and beaches is prohibited.
