Although Amtrak is more often thought of in conjunction with rail travel, it can also apply to bus travel. Amtrak has a system of bus services to connect the Amtrak train stations with areas that are at a distance from the train stations. In Tahoe this includes South Shore with stops at the South Y Transit Center and Stateline Transit Center in South Lake Tahoe and the Kingsbury Transit Center on the Nevada side. The Amtrak train station in Truckee is serviced by the California Zephyr train on a route renowned for the beauty of the landscapes through which it travels. The California Zephyr runs daily between Chicago and San Francisco or, to be more specific, from between Chicago and Emeryville, California, with Amtrak bus service onward to San Francisco and Oakland. Adjacent stops on this route include Winnemucca and Reno to the east and Colfax, Roseville, Sacramento and Davis to the west.
