Originally established 1964, Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe as we know it today came about from the 1987 merger of two separate resorts, Slide Mountain and Mt. Rose. Separated by a steep face that had been off-limits to snow-sports enthusiasts for decades, The Chutes officially opened in 2004 with the addition of the Chuter lift. Descending from the resort’s 9,700-foot summit elevation, the 200-acre Chutes offer some the longest vertical in North America, 1,500 feet of north-facing slopes with pitches from 35 to 55 degrees and some of the driest snow in Tahoe. But Mt. Rose is more than just double diamond runs. Half of their 1,200 acres is rated for beginner or intermediate athletes. With the highest base elevation of any resort in the area, at 8,260 feet, they’ve got eight lifts servicing more than 60 trails and three terrain parks. Mt. Rose is situated in the Carson Range, the closest ski resort to Reno (about 25 miles from downtown) and only about 10 miles from Lake Tahoe. They offer lessons and rentals and have a full-service repair shop as well as two separate base lodges with food and refreshments. Be sure to look up as you’re driving to Mt. Rose to see the Chutes towering above you. And once you’re up top at almost 10,000 feet, be sure to take in the view of the Washoe Valley and the Humboldt-Toiyabe range before you begin your 2.5-mile descent to the bottom.
