Getting To and Around Lake Tahoe
Lake Tahoe transportation options are plentiful, and that’s a good thing since this area is the stage for roughly 15 towns. Split down the middle and separating Nevada and California, the Lake Tahoe area takes up a lot of land and encompasses many miles. With so many wonderful outdoor recreation opportunities interwoven between the communities, it is important to have a way to negotiate Lake Tahoe travel with ease. Although things become much easier if you have your own transportation, there are other alternatives. Here's a gathering of Lake Tahoe's travel options.
As you can see from the options below, you have a myriad of options for Tahoe transportation whether by air, water, bike trail, train, bus, rental car, taxi or trolley. The local bus services connect you cheaply and conveniently to most places you’ll want to go. They even run ski shuttles during the winter season, and they accommodate bikes as well. The Town of Truckee has an additional public bus system that offers Dial-A-Ride and fixed-route service.
Lake Tahoe Airports, Trolleys, Taxis and More
Flying directly into a Tahoe airport is possible for those with private planes. The Truckee Tahoe Airport is on the outskirts of Truckee; the other is outside of South Lake Tahoe, Lake Tahoe Airport. If you're flying here commercially, you'll come into Reno-Tahoe International Airport in Reno. In fact, as of May 2021, a hop-on jet service called JSX has expanded operations with twice-daily flights in and out of Reno-Tahoe International to Oakland and Las Vegas four days a week.
For people in South Lake Tahoe there are two water taxi services that take people between Camp Richardson and Zephyr Cove with a few stops in between. There are various charter services as well. Trolleys are another Tahoe transportation option and a cool way to see Lake Tahoe. They offer an open-air, unobstructed view that other buses just can't offer. Talk about a beautiful ride!
Lake Tahoe is an area that is all about getting outside and enjoying the great outdoors, so it’s only fitting that there are paved biked paths for people to enjoy whether walking, running or biking. Some consider this the best Tahoe transportation choice there is!
