River Ranch Lodge is hopping with customers in T-shirts and sunglasses smiling and mingling around on the banks of the babbling Truckee River. Kids dance in front of a speaker as the bartender mixes mai tais and mojitos for those age 21 and older.
Behind the Patio Bar, River Ranch Manager Alex (aka Turbo) fixes me a Tincup whiskey drink before running off to bring out food. I see him minutes later bringing out a plate of nachos peaked with a pile of guacamole so big it looked like it was made with at least three whole avocados. A server carries out a tray of burgers and fries to another couple seated at the end of the bar, the fresh-off-the-grill scent wafting through the crowd so intensely that it stops the group next to me mid-conversation.
“Oh my gosh, that smells so good,” one woman says, her eyes trained on the food. “Should we get a menu?”
On the edge of the patio, against the backdrop of trees, mountains and moving water, a staff member who people know as Vibes sets up a stage for the band playing that night.
“This is my baby,” Vibes says about the stage. “It’s cool to see the entire place packed on the patio and people having dinner when we have music.”
The summer of 2025 was the first year River Ranch brought its live concert series back since the Covid pandemic, and the place was constantly packed. Considering the property has a long history of catering to overnighters, diners and outdoor enthusiasts, it only makes sense for River Ranch to add entertainment into the mix.

“I don’t know how long River Ranch Lodge has been holding concerts, but people say they saw STS9 here … that was a huge thing, but way before my time,” says Turbo, who started out as a busboy at the lodge nine years ago.
When the series came back in summer 2025, people found out about the concerts mainly through word of mouth and from posters tacked up around town. Turbo says they were “hugely busy.” The patio comfortably fits 400 to 500 people standing or 200 people seated.
“Last year we sold tickets and VIP tables on the terrace,” Turbo says. “The whole community showed up last May when The Nomads played; we set a daily sales record. And we were pretty much that busy for every show after that.”
For the 2026 season, the concert series will be held on Mondays – two at the end of May, two in June, two in the final two weeks of August and two in the first two weeks of September.
For the eight concerts, Turbo is hoping to have local favorite bands The Blues Monsters, Pipe Down, Coburn Station, ViceGrip and, playing again, The Nomads. Other bands are yet to be decided based on funding. Casamigos and Tincup are returning as major sponsors of the concert series.
Along with the eight-concert series, River Ranch is hoping to have music in some capacity – whether that’s a DJ or singer/songwriter – every evening on the patio while people are having dinner.

“I want to have more local performers here; it really changes the vibe,” Turbo says.
If you want to have the ultimate Tahoe night out, book a room at River Ranch Lodge the night of a concert.
“People are stoked to stay here during a show,” Turbo says.
River Ranch Lodge was initially erected in 1888, but it became dilapidated during the Depression. It was later rebuilt, and the owners added a restaurant and then kept expanding its offerings.
“It’s become a little time capsule,” Turbo says. River Ranch is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. The lodge has a great relationship with the rafting companies that operate on the Truckee River, allowing rafters to come in at their dock. The 5-mile Historic Truckee River Bike Path runs right by the restaurant/lodge, making it a great place for a pitstop.
“All of it is good,” Turbo says. “The draw here is the venue, the vibe, the history. We’re a little isolated and can fit a ton of people on the deck. We can have weddings and SnowFest events, and doing music here has been awesome. It’s been the highlight of my career.”
Looking up toward the hotel rooms, all facing the Patio Bar, I think about how nice it would be to stay at the 19-room lodge with all the activities, dining and entertainment right on or near the property. To be able to fall asleep to your favorite bands, fortified with good food and drinks, and then waking up to the sound of the rushing Truckee River – that’s the embodiment of Truckee/Tahoe life.
