Length & Shape
Ski boots are usually measured in Mondo Point sizing, a measurement of the length of the foot in centimeters (28.0 = 28 cm). Boot fitters will use this measurement as a rough guide. A precision fit requires what is called a Shell Fit, and any knowledgeable boot fitter should use this method to accurately size a ski boot.
To perform the Shell Fit, the boot fitter will place your foot in the shell of the ski boot with the liner removed. With your foot slid forward, making contact with the front of the boot, the boot fitter will measure the distance between your heel and the back of the shell, and based on your skiing ability recommend a ski boot that’s the perfect size for you.
Width & Volume
The width of a ski boot is called the last. The tolerances that boot-fitting professionals work with are millimeters. The difference between the most narrow lasted boot and the widest lasted boot that a rental ski shop may have is less than a centimeter. The difference between an awesome day on the mountain and sitting in the lodge in pain can be attributed to either a padded or an ultra light sock. Finding the right shape along with the right length are the two cornerstones to fitting your ski boots.
Getting to Know Your New Boots
Make sure to buckle the boot. This will secure the fit, placing the heel in the heel pocket and freeing up space for the toes. A new boot should be as tight and uncomfortable as it will ever be, but don’t worry, things will expand over time. Your toes should have contact with the front of the boot, feeling cramped but not crushed. There should be a slightly uncomfortable firm pressure around the entire foot indicating close contact with the shell. The heel should be firmly in place, resisting movement when replicating a skiing motion.
