Things to Do in Lake Tahoe in Summer

The Tahoe Symphony Orchestra is on a mission to raise awareness and appreciation of classical orchestral and choral music in the greater Reno-Tahoe area by bringing quality, affordable, live performances to intimate, local venues and providing an opportunity for accomplished, Tahoe-area musicians to display and develop their talents. Founded in 2005 by James and Nancy Rawie as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit musical arts organization, the Tahoe Symphony has a worldwide footprint, having performed shows around the globe, including Italy, Salzburg-Prague, Slovakia/Hungary, Southern France and more. Upcoming performances in the 2024 season include Red, White and Tahoe Blue, an upbeat showcase of Broadway, opera and patriotic music in July; the annual 9/11 Memorial Concert, honoring America’s finest in September; and the moving Holiday classic, Messiah, in December. Those younger than age 23 always get in free, and a senior’s discount is available for all shows. The nightly entertainment includes world-class comedy magicians performing in an intimate 107-seat, stadium-style theater. The lineup of performances includes a full slate of all-ages, family-friendly shows as well as a more limited selection of adult-oriented offerings. In addition to entertainment, The Loft Theatre's restaurant, TASTE at The Loft, features a vibrant mix of small plates and American tapas meant to be shared with your dining companions. The menu and acts change frequently, making the destination fun to visit multiple times a year. The Loft Lounge is a late-night hotspot in Heavenly Village.

One of the greatest ways to see Lake Tahoe is via bicycle. With miles of dirt trails, bike routes and paved roads, there is fun to be had no matter what your age or athletic ability. Explore the untouched meadows and woodlands of Washoe Meadows State Park, offering serene trails and breathtaking views at the base of Echo Summit's escarpment. Lake Tahoe, 15 minutes away, gets all the attention, but Truckee has a gem of its own: Donner Lake. While not as big and broad as Big Blue, Donner Lake offers up a good bit of watery fun too. One of the best places to access Donner is West End Beach. In summer months, there is a modest admission fee to enter the 10-acre west end area, but the sandy beach and roped-off, kid-friendly swim area is the place to take youngsters to build sand castles and splash in the water all under the watch of life guards. Operated by the Truckee Donner Park and Recreation Department, West End Beach also has paddleboards, kayaks and pedal boats available to rent. There is plenty of fun on the beach area: two playgrounds for kids to get their kicks on, a sand volleyball court, tennis court and horseshoe pits. A snack bar serves up soft drinks, hot dogs and ice cream. Get there early and stake out a picnic table and grill. There are shady group picnic areas available by reservation.
