Lake Tahoe Fall Guide

By Tahoe Staff | Thursday, January 14, 2016

Time to fall in love with Lake Tahoe, all over again….

While summer and winter are the obvious times to visit, a hidden secret is just how perfect autumn is for a Lake Tahoe vacation. The crowds have thinned with the waning daylight, but the temperatures are perfect for getting outdoors and really discovering the area.

Lake Tahoe Mountain Biking & Cycling

The trails are quieter but the views remain. Lake Tahoe is perfect for cyclists of all age and skill level. Some of the most picturesque and challenging mountain bike rides in the U.S. are in the Tahoe are, but there are also easy sloping trails that make disappearing into the trees an option for beginners too. The roads have less traffic on them too, and checking out the Lake Tahoe fall foliage while riding on a perfect fall day is nothing short of spectacular.

Lake Tahoe Hiking & Horseback Riding

Many of Lake Tahoe’s trails are open to hikers, bikers and equestrians, but some, such as the Tahoe Rim Trail, offer days just for those on foot (two or four!), so if you’re looking for some serious communing with nature, you’ve come to the right place. Lake Tahoe hiking trails range in difficulty from hikes for kids to those for well-conditioned hikers. Learn How to Prepare for a Hike in the Sierras. Lake Tahoe Kayaking & Standup Paddleboarding

Sure, the water temp is a little brisk, but bundle up; the rewards of getting out on the lake at this time of year are many. Calmer waters, fewer inhabitants and spectacular views are just a few of the things fall water sports have to offer. Try taking a lesson too. Summer’s tourists are long gone and shops are likely to have more class times available.

Leafing, Alpine-style

Most of Lake Tahoe is surrounded by gorgeous evergreens, but among the lush pine trees are plenty of aspen, which ignite in fiery reds, yellows and oranges for your viewing and photo taking pleasure. Take a hike on such trails as Page Meadows near Tahoe City or Spooner Lake off Highway 28, or simply drive on such roads as Highway 267 or Highway 88 to see the changing colors.
